about 15 minutes there, things were a little tense. any time you have to call for an evacuation to pull firefighters out, you want to make sure everyone is accounted for. it means the situation has gotten very, very risky. too risky for firefighters to continue battling the fire from the inside. they came out, ran a few more hoses and then began battling it from the outside. as of 3:30 this morning, they said the fire was under control. we do not believe there was anyone inside at the time. but they do have the scene still shut down, contained but shut down because they want to wait until daylight to begin the rest of the investigation here. again, good news for what could have been a very, very difficult situation for firefighters. >> thank you very much. the hunt is on in virginia to a man accused of trying to kill his ex-girl friend and two

business beat. >> good morning. >> how are things looking after yesterday? >> pretty good. it was a successful day in terms of volume holding up. we were basically in line with normal volume. there were problems, of course, with power and phone lines and internet. that all kind of fixed itself by the end of the day. if you look at the performance among stock yesterday, kind of flat, right. but for the month of october, anything but flat, sharply down. the nasdaq lost 4.5% last month. it was the worst october for all three major averages since 2008. so it has been an ugly ride. the good news is we have a lot of economic data today. we are struggling to get back on track. some of the subways are opening today. so more people can get to work downtown. and those carpool restrictions, those might hit a couple of people certain hours you need to have a least three people in a car coming into manhattan that could affect volume as well. >> so the number are in.

how much is it going to cost to rebuild from hurricane sandy? >> $50 billion. that is an expectation that we're hearing. yep. you have to look at all the lost business activity plus the uninsured losses. if you add those to the insured losses, you can get a anybody as high as $50 billion. a lot of people say that it could be good for some people. when you are rebuilding a road or a building or a home, that is monday where you are not putting into another project. so in the end, it might be a wash. in fact, most experts agree that rebuilding after a hurricane typically shaves half a percentage point off of local economic growth. >> good numbers to know there. thank you so much. good luck up there. >> thank you. thank you. superstorm sandy still lingering this morning but her days are numbered. the latest on her path coming up next. fire crews are still on the scene of a late night fire here

the last effects of superstorm sandy are being felt in the mountains. the storm brought up to three feet of snow to parts of west virginia and western maryland leaving thousands in the dark. several more inches are possible before the storm dies out for good later on this week. today, governor martin o'malley will visit those hardest hit. >> you have to keep reminding injureself there is that going on. >> it is just a couple hours to

blocked right now. southbound along 270, lanes are open, top stretch below speed. 85 to germantown, a 44 minute commute headed south. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> thank you. new this morning, d.c. police are searching for clues in a homicide in northeast. investigators were called to the scene in the 2000 block of fourth street around 9:30 last night. they say a mans with found shot several times -- a man was found shot severalwould like to from anyone who may have seen something in that area. a large warehouse fire in d.c. isno under control. >> crews were at the scene on morse street all night long battling the flames. melanie alwin has about there all morning long and is live want update. >> reporter: we are seeing a lot of people would have these warehouses along in the 400 block of mothers street, some of the businesses are coming in, trying to get the food, produce animate out thereof because the power is out for the 400 block of morse street

while they continue working on this fire. it is out. it is under control. there is still some steam rising from the building which i want to be clear. there has been some talk about whether or not this is union market. this is the old historic union terminal market. that building dates back to 1931. it is not the new union market that opened up on fisk street -- on fifth street just a few months ago. lots of businesses connect to it on the bottom floor. we don't know which one of those businesses was the source of the fire. they got a call around 10:30 last fight. take a look at some of the video we got while this was an intense fire scene. there were flames and sparks. there were about 120 firefighters that arrived here

to try to battle this flame. the warehouse fire, the deputy chief explained to me, can be really, really dicey. there are so many boxes and pieces of perhaps flammable material, it can be a very tense situation and that is what happened when they had to pull 50 firefighters out of the building on the first alarm. here is the deputy chief talking about that. >> we had everybody out before we switched to a defensive operation. we followed our protocol for that and it never goes as fast as you want it to go. >> reporter: any time you have to evacuate, it is a very, very tense situation. but again, they got everybody out. all the firefighters were out, all 50 of them within 15 minutes. everyone was accounted for. it is under control. we do not believe there was anyone inside. i did also see some fire investigators working between the two old buildings in the

back here. they will continue this investigation at day break. ay >> all right. thank you. charles county police released a sketch of a suspect in a shooting that killed a woman and critically injured her firefighter husband. this is a man that police are looking for. it is believed that he may be in his early 20s and is about six feet tall way slim build. the shootings happened on friday any o. at foot path in waldorf. the firefighter and his wife were walking the dog when the gunman walked by and started firing the shots. so far, investigators have not released a motive. the death toll in the u.s. from superstorm sandy has now topped 70. a countless up in number of home along the shoreline have been damaged or destroyed and some areas are still too hazardous to allow rest don't to go back in. about 25% of hoboken is still

under water. millions are without power in new jersey and new york city as well as thousands in maryland, d.c. and virginia. but a bit of good news in new york city. parts of the subway opened against just after 6:00 this morning. two ambulance strike teams from maryland are on their way to new jersey to help with the superstorm recovery effort. the crews headed out less than an hour ago heading for egg harbor township which is west of atlantic city. each team consists of five ambulances and a supervisor. and an overall task force coordinator. they will be assisting in patient evacuations and 911 emergency responses. sponses. early voting picked back up in maryland after a two-day suspension due to hurricane sandy. there was a big turnout at polling stations in bowie and silver spring. the voting day and hours were extended through tomorrow due to the hurricane. we'll look at those lines. wow! more than 19 million people nationwide have already voted

even though no votes will be counted until election day. some key states are releasing the party affiliation of those who have voted. so far in florida, 4 #% have voted democrat and 41% republican. -- 43% have voted democrat and 41% republican. doug luzader has the poll numbers. recover this is where the race stands right now. a new fox news poll has it tied up 46% apiece, slightly tighter than just a few weeks ago. >> the obama team is hoping that image as like this will count for something, the president taking charge in the wake of superstorm sandy, touring the damage in new jersey. it didn't hurt that one of his strongest critic, new jersey governor chris christie, lavished him with praise. >> it has been a great working relationship to make sure that we're doing the jobs that people elected us to do. i cannot thank the president enough for his personal concern and compassion for our state and for the people of our

does the full moon affect the tides? well, yes. the answer is absolutey, positively yes. >> yeah, it does. >> we've known this for a very long time that the moon affects the tides and the concern with hurricane sandy was that, with the storm surge coming in and all of that kind of stuff, that the full moon would make it, to some extent, worse. not to great degree but it would also influence it and add to it. >> yeah, most experts estimated that the recent full moon added about 5% to the high tides and the storm surge. you had the high tide and a storm surge on top it was and then on top of that, you put the effects of a full moon. you can see all the damage done across new ulm and up in new york associated with that. by the way, ocean city as well, they are now saying that was

the worst storm surge in ocean city since gloria. i've got a little diagram for you. that is showing the moon going around and around the earth there and you can just ciewpped of focus. notice when it gets to the new moon right there, see the bulge there of blue and then when it goes back around to the fuel machine where we were on monday, right this, see the bulge? what is happening is the gravitational pull of the moon is is pulling the world's waters toward t you get that bulge around t the gravitational pull is so strong -- around it. the gravitational pull strong it warps the side of the earth. you get a high tide on the back side as well. tides are highest when we get what is called a spring tide. that is when we get thering aligned with the moon and the sun -- the earth aligned with the moon and the sun. you get the combination of the
